About URC
Overview
Mission and vision
The UNEP Risoe Centre on Energy, Climate and Sustainable Development
(URC) –formerly UNEP Collaborating Centre on Energy and Environment–
was established in October 1990 through a tripartite agreement between
the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of
Denmark, Risoe National Laboratory for
Sustainable Energy at the Technical University of Denmark (Risoe
DTU) –formerly Risoe National Laboratory–, and the
United Nations Environment Programme
(UNEP).
The main function of the URC is to support UNEP in planning and
implementing its energy policy and programme. The general objective of
URC is to promote and facilitate the incorporation of environmental
and development aspects into energy policy and planning worldwide,
especially in developing countries.
URC's mission and vision.
With UNEP's Energy Programme increasing
focus on climate change, the URC activity focus has, beyond the
traditional energy and development issues, included the emerging
carbon markets and the Clean Development Mechanism.
URC is located at Risoe DTU within the
Systems Analysis Division. Risoe
DTU is situated close to
the city of Roskilde, 40 km from Copenhagen.
